Getting Podwatch working.

Setup takes about a minute. If something isn't right, the answers to most problems are below. If yours isn't, email me and I'll help.

Set it up

  1. Open Podwatch. It runs in the menu bar, so no window opens and there's no Dock icon. Look for the chip icon at the right of the menu bar.
  2. Click the icon. The popover asks you to connect your Runpod account.
  3. Paste a Runpod API key and click Connect. Your pods appear within a few seconds.

Want to look around first? Click Try with example pods instead. To leave the example, open settings (the gear) and click Connect my account.

Make a read-only API key

  1. Sign in to the Runpod console and open Settings → API Keys.
  2. Create a new key and give it read-only access. Name it something like "Podwatch" so you know what it's for.
  3. Copy the key and paste it into Podwatch. Runpod only shows it once.

A read-only key lets Podwatch see your pods and balance, but it can't start, stop, create or delete anything. Podwatch never changes your account, so it never needs more.

To use a different key later, open settings (the gear in the popover) and click Change key.

Choose what it shows

Open settings with the gear in the popover, or press ⌘,. Under Display, pick Menu bar, Popover or Widget and switch stats on or off. The menu bar updates as you go.

  • Click a running pod in the popover to show only that pod in the menu bar and widget. Click it again to go back to all running pods.
  • Total spend is what your running pods have cost since they last started, added together.
  • ↗ on a pod opens your pods in the Runpod console.

Add the widget

  1. Right-click your desktop and choose Edit Widgets.
  2. Search for Podwatch, then drag the small or medium widget onto your desktop.

The small widget shows your main pod, with the first stat you've chosen in large type. The medium one shows two pods. Choose its stats under Display → Widget.

What the badge colors mean

  • Purple: pods are running; the badge shows the stats you chose.
  • Grey "Idle": nothing is running. It shows your balance if Account balance is on for the menu bar.
  • Amber: your balance will run out in less than two hours at the current rate. Runpod stops pods at $0, so top up or stop something.
  • Just an icon: no stats are chosen, or nothing is running and balance is off.

Fixing problems

It says Runpod rejected the API key

The key was deleted in the Runpod console, or it was copied with a piece missing. Make a new read-only key and paste it into the popover. Keys are long; make sure you copy all of it.

The menu bar shows a warning triangle

Podwatch couldn't reach Runpod: you might be offline, or Runpod might be having trouble. It tries again on its own, waiting a little longer each time, and goes back to every 15 seconds once it gets through. Open the popover to see the exact message.

I can't see Podwatch in the menu bar

On MacBooks with a notch, items can hide behind it when the menu bar is full. Turn off a few stats under Display → Menu bar, or quit some other menu bar apps. Pressing ⌘ and dragging menu bar items rearranges them.

The widget isn't updating

The widget shows what Podwatch last fetched, so Podwatch needs to be running. A clock icon on the widget means its data is more than 15 minutes old. Open Podwatch and it catches up. Turning on Launch at login in settings keeps it running.

Total spend doesn't match my Runpod bill

Total spend covers your running pods since they last started. Your bill also includes storage, stopped pods' volumes and earlier runs.

How do I quit Podwatch?

Open the popover and press ⌘Q, or open settings and click Quit Podwatch at the bottom.

Removing Podwatch

Quit Podwatch and drag it from Applications to the Bin. To remove your saved API key too, open Keychain Access, search for com.danielli.podwatch and delete the entry. You can also delete the key in the Runpod console, which stops it working everywhere.
